Urinalysis frequently asked Questions and Answers

Tell me more about the urinalysis strips

Examination of the urine using a "dipstick" will reveal the pH (acidity) and concentration of urine, while simultaneously testing for several chemicals at once. Some tests indicate that blood and white blood cells in particular might be present, a sign of a urinary infection, kidney stones, or other problems. Nitrite, a chemical produced by most bacteria, suggests a bacterial infection. Sugar in the urine is a sign of diabetes (high blood sugar), while ketones can indicate a diabetic complication. Protein in the urine can indicate kidney disease or impaired kidney function.

The use of reagent strips is intended as an initial screen for abnormalities in the urine. These test results should be regarded as an indication of a potential disease and not conclusive of a specific diagnosis. Further testing and consultation with a healthcare professional is necessary to confirm the presence of a specific disease or health condition.

Why is Specific Gravity (SG) important?

Specific Gravity (SG) indicates the concentration of urine and is dependent on the time the urine has been in bladder, an important factor for accurate urinalysis test results. If the SG is below 1.020 – 1.025 the test indicates that the urine has not been in the bladder for the required minimum of 2-3 hours. So, unless there is kidney failure which will indicate a low SG, all the test results will be incorrect!

Can you test refrigerated urine sample?

Yes. Fresh urine samples should be sampled within 4 hours from collection. Refrigerated urine samples should be brought to room temperature (15° - 30°C) before testing.
